A new world order
Castleden constructs a topography of our relationship to space. These works offer a cartography of the world made from the non-spaces in which we live, constructed as the map of our existence of history and time.
In several works she creates a diagram of location that is disrupted by the disjunction of our imagining that we know where we are.
Our helpless attempts at positioning are reduced to dots on a schema designed in relation to the information we possess and driven by our desire to equate this information to the sum of our experiences.
In one work, upright on the floor, she confounds our cliched notion of "digging a hole to China", presenting us with surprising results . and disrupting our connection to the known by our constant arrival at places that are not the ones we imagined.
These are very accomplished works and in the case of Must Learn about the World and Arctic Circle they are realised with a sophistication of drawn and painted media worthy of a Jasper Johns. |
