- Also at Galerie Düsseldorf is a small but nonetheless intense show by Jocelyn Gregson. The four paintings in Maritime couldn't be more different from Gaunt's work if they tried.
For Maritime, Gregson has painted four images of huge cargo ships sitting off port on flat seas. Gregson's photorealism is a time-oonsuming pursuit - her title of Maritime perhaps alludes to more than just the passing ships she is painting.
Her meticulous method of applying paint brings to mind the passage of time and the journey that in this case applies to the subject matter and the painting method.
These big, expansive ships don't just glide along on top of the water, they somehow extend the architecture of the sea, and Gregson has managed to evoke this structural nuance in her still and rigid waterscapes.
- Jocelyn Gregson' Maritime is at Galerie Dusseldorf, Mosman Park until August 31
