TALES OF LIFE AND DEATH 1990-1992 (*1994)
These drawings are reflective musings on
conception & birth and were made in Nyuh
Kuning (Bali), Fremantle & York (WA) between
1990 & 1992. Canto XII (Is there a God?) was
reworked in 1994. The images are influenced
by aspects of Balinese spirituality, by the so
called primitive style wood carving from the
Sebatu area (near Ubud Bali) & by a specific
Egyptian Book of the Dead...
The titles are taken from this book, known as
Papyrus 3024 in the collection of the Berlin
Museum Germany & translated by Bika Reed as
Rebel in the Soul: A Sacred Text of Ancient
Egypt 1978 IT International Press New York.
With the exception of Canto XVI, shown in
Collectors, an exhibition curated by Andrew
Nicholls at the Moores Building Contemporary
Art Gallery Fremantle in 2002, the drawing
series Tales of Life & Death has never been
exhibited in Australia.
