Working drawing illistrated

Based on the dimensions and official design of an ice rink, an array of lines seem to depict a maze. Strong contours arranged in a particular way allude to an elevation found on a topographical map. Like a gracious figure skater that carved the pattern into the ‘ice’, the surface, with its mirror finish, becomes the very platform on which this optical dance takes place. The two dimensional lines cut into the immaculate glaze and simulate a three dimensional object. Drawing on the formal qualities of Modernism and optical strategies, Scratching the Surface operates on a number of layers.

This work was originally exhibited in the City of Perth Art Award at The Perth Institute of Contemporary Art in 2005
