The four-day exhibition displayed over 3000 works of contemporary art across all media, by more than 900 artists represented by 86 galleries from around Australia; as well as New Zealand, China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. Held at the World Heritage listed Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton Gardens, Melbourne from 2 – 6 August 2006, the Fair attracted 26,000 people, representing a 23% increase in attendance on the 2004 Melbourne Art Fair. This year’s fair generated sales of $10,500,000, compared with 21,000 people and $8,000,000 in 2004. 75% of the works sold were under $10,000 in value. Billed as the “must-see” art event of the year, Melbourne Art Fair offered Melburnians, interstate and international visitors the opportunity to view a vast range of the latest in contemporary art and also to purchase quality artwork by some of the best Australian and international emerging and well-known artists working today. “We are delighted with the response to this year’s Melbourne Art Fair. It’s wonderful to see so many people experience this dynamic and extensive exhibition of contemporary art,” said Bronwyn Johnson, director of the Melbourne Art Fair. “The Melbourne Art Fair Foundation’s primary goal is to promote contemporary art and the ethical representation of living artists, raising awareness of artists working today, so we are obviously thrilled with the success of this year’s event”. |
